Organic waste accounts for approximately 30% of Glastonbury’s Household Trash. By composting this waste, community members can generate a valuable soil amendment product for lawn care and gardening activities while reducing overall community refuse tonnage, increasing the recycling rate, and saving tax dollars. With that in mind, this program has been organized to provide a convenient opportunity for residents to implement composting practices in their homes. The program is also designed to increase public awareness of home composting options and the benefits of using compost to improve or maintain high quality soil.
As a Silver Certified community through the Sustainable CT program, Glastonbury is continuously working to achieve a 60% recycling and waste diversion goal by 2024. Backyard Composting recycles organic wastes into a usable product directly in the composter’s backyard! By adding compost to your gardens and lawns, you can also conserve water, grow healthy plants, reduce the use of fertilizer and pesticides, and protect the environment. There are also many environmental benefits to using rain barrels in your home:
- Reduce storm water runoff (stormwater runoff is water that does not soak into the ground and can cause erosion and transport pollutants to local waterways)
- Conserve Water – Collect rain water to water your lawn/garden or wash patio furniture and gardening tools
- Minimize or eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers as rain water contains natural nutrients
Please note, rain barrel water should NOT be used to drink or bathe in and barrels should be emptied and stored throughout the winter months.
