The Town of Glastonbury is pleased to announce that it is one of the first Connecticut municipalities to achieve certification as a Sustainable CT community.  Glastonbury successfully met the program’s high standards in a broad range of sustainability categories and associated accomplishments to qualify for the prestigious Silver certification.  Glastonbury is proud to be one of only 22 communities statewide to achieve this recognition and one of only 5 to receive the programs’ Silver level certification.

Sustainable CT, a statewide initiative that supports and recognizes sustainability action by Connecticut communities, was launched last year and announced its first group of certified towns this week.  In its application for Sustainable CT certification, Glastonbury demonstrated significant achievements through multiple actions in nine sustainable impact areas ranging from thriving local economies and vibrant arts and culture to clean transportation and strategic and inclusive public services.  Glastonbury successfully completed several actions within each of the defined categories including energy efficient initiatives, sustainably-conscious town policies and procedures, hosting the town’s first sustainability event, and engaging the community in its sustainability efforts.

Glastonbury Town Manager Richard J. Johnson is pleased to receive such a prestigious award in the first year of the Sustainable CT Program.

“Glastonbury has a longstanding history of incorporating sustainable initiatives into all aspects of town operations therefore the town is honored to receive this prestigious award in recognition of the community’s ongoing efforts. The Sustainable CT certification process provided an opportunity to showcase many of the sustainable initiatives, energy efficiency projects, and equitable efforts already in place in Glastonbury, expand upon sustainable programs and practices available to the community, and formally document existing processes that help guide operational decisions.  Glastonbury is proud to be among only 5 communities in the state of CT to receive this award and looks forward to future opportunities to be at the forefront of sustainable initiatives in the years to come.

The Silver certification required communities to submit sustainable action items totaling 400 points and complete three equitable projects.  Through strategic partnerships with local organizations and a highly engaged community, Glastonbury successfully completed the sustainability projects and is proud to report that the Town secured 495 points for receipt of the Silver certification.

"Congratulations to our 2018 certified Sustainable CT communities," said Lynn Stoddard, Executive Director of the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University, which administers the program.  "We are inspired by your leadership and eager to share your accomplishments in building efficient, thriving, and resilient communities."

With input from municipal leaders across the state, Sustainable CT was developed under the leadership of the Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University.  The program is independently funded, with significant support from three Connecticut philanthropic foundations.  The founding funders include the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, the Hampshire Foundation, and the Common Sense Fund.

Glastonbury and other certified communities will be recognized on October 30 at the Annual Convention of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, followed by additional local and regional recognition events in the coming months.
