Town Manager, Richard J. Johnson, is pleased to announce that the Town of Glastonbury has been selected among communities nationwide as the recipient of two prestigious awards recognizing the innovation, program excellence, and beneficial community value of Riverfront Park.  The International City Management Association (ICMA) has recognized the Town of Glastonbury for its annual ‘Community Partnership Program Excellence Award’, an award that celebrates programs that demonstrate innovation and excellence through effective community partnerships with private, public, government, local, state, and nationally-based entities.  Over the course of several decades, Glastonbury formed effective relationships with public and private entities, property owners, and local, state, and national organizations to successfully acquire land, remediate a significant brownfield site, relocate Welles Street, construct a senior and community center, and assist in the funding, design, and execution of Riverfront Park.  Many of the amenities enjoyed by the community today results from the successful relationships and generous donations of local groups and individuals who partnered with the town of this project.  Community involvement was paramount in the overall implementation of park construction and the Town is grateful to all who contributed time, funding, goods, and services towards this outstanding project.  This national award will be presented to Glastonbury at the ICMA National Conference in September.  For more information on this award, please visit

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) also recognized the Town of Glastonbury as the recipient of its ‘Innovation in Park Design Award’.  The NRPA Innovation Awards celebrate park and recreation agencies nationwide that have improved and empowered their communities through innovative practices in park design, health and wellness, conservation, and social equity.  Glastonbury’s award category specifically celebrates a unique park or facility that embraces innovative technology, strategies, or programs to improve their community.  This award is one of four Innovation categories, with only one community recognized in each category countrywide.  Glastonbury now has the opportunity to compete against the other 3 category winners to earn the “Best in Innovation Award”, which will be announced at the NRPA Awards ceremony this September.  Residents are encouraged to vote for Glastonbury between June 25th and June 29th by visiting to assist in earning the Town this elite honor. To vote, visit the NRPA website and scroll down until you see our project, labeled "Innovation in Park Design: Town of Glastonbury".

Now serving as a hub for community activity, Glastonbury Riverfront Park represents a longstanding vision to establish recreational, riverfront access for residents and visitors.  Today, it offers countless amenities to the Glastonbury community, ranging from passive and active recreational opportunities to a nationally accredited senior and community center, two beautiful venues for events and social gatherings, and emergency river access for public safety responders.  These national awards are reflective of the perseverance, innovation, and community collaboration that made the project vision a highly successful reality.  The Town would like to extend its sincerest thanks and appreciation to all who engaged in the process, advocated for the park, and donated their time, funds, efforts, and resources to support the project.  It’s a true, transformative success story to be enjoyed by generations to come and the Town is proud to achieve this national recognition for the community’s collaborative efforts.
