With over 2,000 licensed dogs in town, local dog lovers are in the process of raising funds needed to build the town's first dog park. The dog park will be a fenced-in area where dogs can run and socialize off-leash legally and safely. A separate area for small dogs will be included. Some of the park amenities will include benches, waste receptacles, dog litter bags, water stations and more!

The Glastonbury Dog Park will offer many benefits including:

  • A safe and controlled environment for dogs to play and exercise
  • A well-shaded designated off-leash area for dogs and dog owners to socialize with each other
  • Encouraging responsible dog ownership by promoting licensing, vaccinations and clean up

Dog Park Location Finalized
“If we build it, they will come”, sums up the sentiments of Glastonbury’s Dog Park Committee. With over 2,000 licensed dogs in town, that assertion seems almost certain. The Committee, which has been planning and fundraising for almost two years, is confident and optimistic that the facility can be developed in 2010. According to Ray Purtell, Director of Parks and Recreation, “a two acre portion of the Riverfront Park on Welles Street has been set aside for the park”. The Dog Park is intended to be a place where dog owners can legally allow their pets to run off leash. The fenced area will be divided into two components; one for all dogs and one for small dogs. Several neighboring communities are either in the process or have already developed dog parks including Wethersfield, South Windsor, Manchester and Colchester to name a few.

The Committee has raised $30,000 towards the estimated $45,000-$50,000 project cost. Ray Purtell added, “the biggest cost is the perimeter fence. As you can imagine, it takes quite a few linear feet of fence to enclose a two acre site.” The Committee’s fundraising recently received a nice boost when local resident Mark Sellew, owner of Pride’s Corner Farm, Lebanon, Connecticut, volunteered to donate all of the plant material for the landscaping. Committee members will contribute the sweat equity to plant and maintain the trees and shrubs.

The Committee is hoping that dog owners will help get the project over the hump with year end donations. Committee member, Sandy Allen, says that, “if every licensed dog owner contributed $10.00, we could make the dog park happen very quickly”. Donations can be sent to the “Glastonbury Dog Park Fund, c/o Glastonbury Parks & Recreation, P.O. Box 997, Glastonbury, CT 06033.
