Important Permit Update!
The Office of the State Building Inspector (OSBI) and the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) have approved the 2016 State Building Code and 2016 State Fire Safety Code and will be effective for all permit applications made on or after October 1, 2016. For the next 3-4 months, projects with designs based on the 2005 codes, in progress before October, may apply for a modification if meeting the 2016 codes is impractical. Requests after that time must have a substantial, documented reason for the request, such as a delay in land use approvals, funding problems, etc. The SBC includes the 2012 ICC family of codes, the 2009 Edition of ICC/ANSI AS117.1 for accessibility, and the 2014 National Electrical Code, with CT amendments. The SFSC includes portions of the 2012 International Fire Code as Part III, and the existing buildings portions of the 2012 NFPA 101 as Part VI, with CT amendments. The Building Inspection/Zoning Enforcement Division is responsible for the review and issuance of permits for all types of construction including structural, electrical, heating and plumbing. Inspection services are provided throughout construction up to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy. Building and Zoning complaints are investigated and cease and desist orders will be issued when necessary. The Division also conducts joint code inspections with the Fire Marshal Division and manages the activities of the Zoning Board of Appeals. Citizens filing a complaint should provide their full name and contact information to help expedite remediation. While the Division will make its best effort to address anonymous complaints that are deemed to be matters of immediate life safety, acting without a verified source limits our response capabilities and often delays resolution.
